♣ His Cure, No Side Effects
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, Who forgives all your iniquity, Who heals all your diseases” – Psalm 103:2-3
The standards of medical care in America are criminal; not only is it astronomically and unjustifiably expensive but also produces other harsh and dangerous side effects to cure just one ailment or severe sickness, and which often times proves to be ineffectual. I often find myself dazed and bewildered at how the American government can finance and achieve successful space programmes in search of extraterrestrial life but ‘somehow’ embarrassingly fail (or rather chooses to neglect) in treating human beings.
The British National Health Service (NHS), although far from perfect, has for many decades provided humane care at very little cost, if at no cost at all in most instances for service recipients. No matter what complaints have arisen over the last decade or so, Britain has provided qualitative medical care at a competent standard that leaves most so called ‘affluent’ nations in the dark ages – particularly when it comes to ethical procedures. Doctor’s visits are at no cost and pharmaceutical drugs are very inexpensive, which for the most part produce the desired results – and not forgetting that the majority of patients are correctly diagnosed.
Ridiculous while being hilarious, it is almost unbelievable to hear on American radio and television the side effects of medication: “may cause depression, anxiety, fits of rage, insomnia, loss of appetite, thoughts of suicide, and may cause death…” And do you notice how abnormally fast they have to ‘lawfully’ reel that information off at the end of the commercial? I think it’s more than an issue of keeping within a certain time frame; more like in desperate hope that no one quite catches the spiel. Such authorised medicine for various ailments is not a cheap way to encounter a possible and unpleasant fatal end! Why on earth, pharmacists are unable to produce medication that works without the unwarranted, cruel side effects is beyond me – unless of course it’s deliberate in keeping consumers drug-dependant, or maybe a justified form of ‘sophisticated euthanasia’ and ‘population control’?
How certain ‘graduates’ succeed in entering the field of medical care – and still continue to practice (that’s what most of them do is ‘practice’; they should perfect and get it right the first time, not guess when dealing with patients) – is enough to debilitate any ‘faith’ in doctors, especially when they misdiagnose through their incompetence and carelessness. When I was in the care field, mistakes were not allowed particularly when it came to the administration of medication. These are people’s lives you’re dealing with, not ‘lumps of meat’; deplorable, yet a very common mentality within many hospitals. Is it any wonder why ethics within medical science is now an almost gone byword? Hospitals are no longer a place for the patient’s recovery of health but for the doctor’s discovery of wealth.
That’s anything but good news; the opposite of that is we have a Physician, Who perfectly diagnoses our root causes, not just our symptoms; we have a Saviour Who spiritually, in context of Psalm 103:3, heals all our diseases (that is no implication that He doesn’t heal physically). He never misdiagnoses, never second guesses, never leaves a work uncompleted, is never unavailable, never late, never short-staffed, never forgets or neglects, never leaves our side, never slumbers nor sleeps. He is the perfect Man, the Son of God – Jesus Christ – our Psychiatrist Who clothes us in our right minds, Who does all things well, with no ailment side effects, and Who never lays a charge to our account but says, “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourself in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to Me; hear, that your soul may live” (Isaiah 55:1-3); “Come to Me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Original sin has caused all the ailments, diseases and death that we encounter today. Had there been no transgression, we would have gone on from perfection to perfection. Although, as Christians, we still taste the effects of sin, the infirmities of sickness and death – the dominion of it all has been broken by the power of Christ’s blood that flowed freely through His propitiatory atonement for you and me. While our outward man is degenerating our inward man is being renewed day by day. The world struggles in its endless vain attempts to preserve life, but none can reverse the effects God has sentenced on a fallen world, destined for eternal wrath.
We are the workmanship of God in progress guaranteed to result in bringing glory to Him (Philippians 1:6). God’s methods and timing is not just different but higher than ours, Who is working everything perfectly to the counsel of His will; all of the afflictions we experience are preparing us for an eternal weight of beauty and glory that is utterly impossible to compare with anything in all of creation. But when Our Lord and King appears we shall see Him as He is, being transformed into His likeness, our bodies being changed from the corruptible into the incorruptible, mortality putting on immortality in an incalculable moment – new bodies, restored beyond Adam’s sinless glory, perfectly healed and wholly refashioned without spot, blemish or censure to dwell eternally before the presence and light of the Most High God.
